Press Release
New York, New York September 16, 2002
Nearly 60% of libraries in a sample of 80 academic and special libraries believe that they could obtain special funding for E-books if the E-book industry develops quickly,
according to Library Use of E-books, a new study from Primary Research Group Inc.
The study includes data from a survey 80 academic and special libraries about their e-book usage and purchasing plans, as well as supplemental data from a sample of
46 corporate libraries and 75 distance learning programs.
Among Some Of The Report's Main Findings:

Law libraries are major users of E-books and legal publishing is one of the most fertile areas for E-book development.

*More than 41% of the libraries in the sample had a subscription to NetLibrary, including nearly 61% of the college libraries. About 78% of the librarians taking the survey had heard of NetLibrary.

*Only a little more than 7% of the libraries in the sample say that their E-book collections have impacted their print book collection development plans.

More than 22% of the libraries in the sample have E-book licenses that allow for simultaneous use of at least some titles in their E-book collection.

More than 13% of the libraries in the sample lend out to patrons some form of E-book reader specifically designed to access E-books.

The Adobe Acrobat E-book reader was the most popular E-book reading software among the librarians in the sample

Almost 12% of the libraries in the sample have used Etext.Lib, a public domain E-book collection offered by the University of Virginia.

Reference literature was the subject category of E-books that attracted the most interest among library patrons, according to the librarians in the sample that used E-books.

Close to 17% of distance learning programs surveyed use E-books in their programs, and distance learning students tend to be heavier spenders on educational materials than students in traditional classes.

Librarians responding to the survey answered a range of 50 questions concerning their use of e-book readers, e-book software, e-book web and ftp sites, as well as their use of intranet
and remote-access site licenses from book and directory publishers, and print-on-demand services.

The report is available for $80.00 from Primary Research Group Inc.
