VITAMIN PILLS AND MINERAL/HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS: Usage Patterns and Spending Plans of Americans Aged 50 and Over
• More than 69% of those sampled regularly take some form of vitamin pill or supplement.
• Usage was slightly more common in the older age groups, and among Catholics and those of southern
• or western European origin.
• Women were slightly more likely than men to take a vitamin or supplement.
• More than 25% of those sampled have ever taken a Vitamin A supplement.
• Usage was more common in the middle and high income groups and among those living in major cities.
• 15.74% of those in the survey currently take anti-oxidant vitamins with most users under 65.
• Political conservatives are more likely to use antioxidants than liberals.
• About 13% of those in the sample have ever taken Beta Carotene supplements
• An estimated 10.7 million individuals in the target group have tried Beta Carotene supplements
• 41.2% of those sampled have ever taken Vitamin C supplements
• Individuals of German or Scandinavian origins were more likely than others to have ever taken Vitamin C supplements.
• Political centrists and conservatives are more commonly users of Vitamin C than those on the political left.
• 6.71% of those sampled currently take chromium supplements
Most users live in small, medium sized or large cities.
• More than 31% of those in the sample currently take a Vitamin E supplement.
• Use of Vitamin E as a supplement is somewhat heavier among those of Russian/East European or Jewish ethnic origins.
• 5.65% of those in the sample currently take flax seed oil. More males in the sample took flax seed oil than females.
• More than 10% of those surveyed in the 50-54 year old age group currently take flaxseed oil.
• 11.1% of those sampled have ever taken Ginseng as a supplement.
• Individuals in the younger age groups are more likely to have heard of Ginseng
• Non-Christians were about three times as likely as Christians to have ever taken Ginseng as a supplement.
• An estimated 9.4 million Americans aged 50 or greater have taken Ginseng as a supplement.
• 28% of those sampled currently take a multiple vitamin pill.
• Usage appears to drop off considerably after age 75.
• Usage appears to be mostly independent of income and, to a large extent, ethnicity.
• More than 32% of women in the sample took a multiple vitamin pill.
