Press Release from Primary Research Group, Inc.

PRIMARY RESEARCH GROUP INC has just published: The 50+ MARKET FOR SPORTS & EXERCISE EQUIPMENT, PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
PRICE: $2195.00 Publication Date: September 2004
Tables: 450+ Pages: 125+

This report gives extensive data on the use of health clubs, amount of exercise per week,
participation in a broad range of sports (tennis, golf, swimming, racquetball, vigorous walking,
bicycling, aerobics, weight lifting, ping pong, basketball and softball), athletic equipment
purchases, performance of yoga, jogging, pilates, tai chi, and ballet/modern dance. Also gives
detailed data on purchases of exercise videos and usage of particular videos.

•	13.29% of those sampled belong to a health club; income level was one of the main determinants of
membership in a health club. Less than 5% of those with an income of less than $35,000 were health
club members, while about 30% of those with household incomes greater than $65,000 were members.

•	Only 2.38% of those living in rural areas were members of health clubs.

•	About 16% of males and about 11% of females in the sample were health club members

•	23.58% of those sampled said that they would consider joining a health club, suggesting a potentially
large market among those aged 50 and over.

•	Individuals aged 60 and under were more likely than others to consider joining a health club, as were
those in the middle and higher income ranges.

•	More than 42% of individuals in the African/Hispanic/Asian ethnic category were interested in
potentially joining a health club, suggesting market potential in this sector of the population

•	Interest was also particularly strong among those living in major cities.

•	The individuals in the sample said that they exercised a mean of 6.33 hours per week, and a
median of 4.75 hours per week. This is their perception of what they do, and not, perhaps, what they do.
This figure suggests that older Americans exercise more than they are perceived to by most experts, or
at least older Americans perceive themselves to exercise more than they do.

•	Median hours of exercise actually rose from the 50-54 year old age group through the 66-70 year old age group.

•	Individuals of Russian/East European and Jewish extraction exercised far more than those in other ethnic groupings.

•	Individuals in large and medium sized cities and rural areas exercised more than those in small cities
        and town and suburbs.

•	Males exercised considerably more than females.

•	4.4% of those sampled played tennis at least 6 times in the past year

•	Tennis playing fell off dramatically after age 70.

•	Tennis playing was highly correlated with household income and most players came from households with
incomes greater than $65,000 per year.

•	Tennis players were much more likely to live in a major or medium sized city or a suburb than elsewhere

•	Male players outnumber female players by more than 3:1 in the target population
