International Survey of Research University Faculty: Evaluation of Faculty Activity Reporting Systems (ISBN No:978-157440-447-0 )

 

The study presents detailed data on how faculty evaluate the efforts of their university to report on and publicize their research findings and other activities.  The report gives specific data for how scholars feel about the efforts of their Offices of Research, the University Library, Department of Information Technology, University Public Relations, the Institutional Digital Repository and other departments in publicizing faculty research.

The study also imparts data and commentary on what faculty think of their activity reporting systems, what kinds of systems are in use, and what can be done to improve such systems. If offers detailed information on how often faculty update their profiles and how often they use the faculty reporting system for their own purposes.

The survey data is based on a survey of more than 500 scholars drawn from more than 50 major research universities in the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. Data is broken out by various criteria, such as type of university, scholar’s country, gender, political views, academic subject specialty, academic title and other criteria. 

Just a few of the 110-page report’s main findings are:

  • Survey participants updated their profile on their university’s faculty activity reporting system a mean of 1.8 times in the past year, though some updated their profile as many as 25 times.
  • 30% of tenured survey participants say that they are dissatisfied or highly dissatisfied with the efforts of their Offices of Research in publicizing university research findings.
  • 12.11% of survey participants in the United States say that their CV information in their faculty reporting systems is quite out of date.
  • 12.08% of survey participants have run or requested a report on their university’s faculty reporting system database to find out about their university’s scholarly output.
