Press Release for Survey of Law School Faculty 2026: View of the Future of Law School Enrollment
Law faculty split on enrollment outlook while most expect J.D. net prices to rise
NEW YORK, October 26, 2026 — Primary Research Group has published Survey of Law School Faculty 2026: View of the Future of Law School Enrollment. The survey of 68 law school faculty and administrators examines five-year expectations for enrollment, J.D. pricing, alternative legal-service pathways, student finance, and the effects of potential reductions in civil legal-aid funding.
Selected findings
-
On enrollment over the next five years, 32.35% expect growth and 27.94% expect contraction; 17.65% expect little change, 10.29% are unsure, and 11.76% did not answer.
-
After scholarships and discounts, 58.82% expect the inflation-adjusted price paid by J.D. students to rise. Only 7.35% expect a decrease.
-
Nearly two-thirds (64.71%) expect at least slight growth in alternatives to the traditional three-year J.D., including limited-license professionals and paraprofessionals. No respondent predicts contraction in these pathways.
-
Asked about the federal student-loan changes described in the survey, 54.41% expect greater reliance on private student loans and 54.41% expect lower enrollment among lower-income students. Another 47.06% foresee fewer entrants to public-interest or lower-paying legal careers. Respondents could select up to four consequences.
-
If federal civil legal-aid support is substantially reduced, the most frequently chosen outcome, at 29.41%, is increased demand for law school clinics and pro bono programs without adequate resources.
The findings provide a benchmark for law school leaders weighing admissions, affordability, program design, and financial aid. Policy-related results reflect respondents’ expectations under the questions’ stated scenarios.
